This tutorial is for you if you already have a Moomoo account and have made your first deposit (Daus recommends RM1,000), but want to split your American ETF buys into small orders first. RM100, RM200, RM300 per order.
New to the word ETF? Read what is an ETF first, then come back here.
The questions Daus gets every week are usually these three: “One unit of VOO costs hundreds of dollars, can RM100 even buy it?”, “Why can’t I buy tonight?”, and “What do the fees actually come to?” This page answers all three, in the order you will hit them in the app.
The examples here use VOO, because VOO is the biggest ETF in Daus’s own portfolio. This is not a recommendation for you to buy VOO. You pick your own ETF, and the steps are the same.
Daus recommends opening a Moomoo account once you have RM1,000 ready for the first deposit. The new-user reward starts at RM1,000, and every order carries a fixed fee (RM3 for a Bursa trade), which eats a big share of a small balance. Technically there is no minimum deposit — this is Daus’s advice.
Not at RM1,000 yet? Don’t register yet, because the 30-day reward clock starts the day you register. Save up first in Versa Cash-i or ShopeePay Money+, and practise with Paper Trading or the simulator meanwhile. (Daus also has referral codes for Versa and Money+.)
Read how to buy the S&P 500 first for the difference between VOO, IVV and SPY, and how to compare stocks & ETFs if you want to line them up against Shariah versions like SPUS and SPWO.

The short answer
- Yes, a single RM100 order can buy a US ETF, in an account that already has a deposit. You buy part of a unit (fractional), not a whole one.
- Fractional purchases only work while the US market is open, which is night to early morning in Malaysia, Monday to Friday (New York time).
- Fees on a fractional order: a platform fee of 0.99% of the order (capped at USD0.99) plus about USD0.24 stamp duty per order. An RM100 order loses about 2% to fees, RM300 about 1.3%, RM1,000 about 0.5%.
- Got an RM25 coupon from the new-user reward? It only turns into cash when you place one buy order worth RM200 or more (in ringgit value, not USD200; the official terms say MYR 200, about USD43.73). So a USD25 order isn’t enough for this coupon.
Details on each below.
Part 1 — Find the right ETF
Search the ETF code, and check its full name
Tap Search, type the ETF code (for example VOO), and read the full name of each result before tapping.
Codes that look alike are usually different products. VOOG is the Growth version, VOOV the Value version, and IVOO is a mid-size company index. VOO’s full name is exactly Vanguard S&P 500 ETF.
- The right one
- All of these are OTHER indexes
Part 2 — Amount or Quantity?
One unit of VOO costs around USD711 (closing price, 25 Sep 2026). Buy by Quantity and you need at least one whole unit, which is almost RM3,000.
That is why, with a small amount, you buy by Amount. You type how much money, and Moomoo works out what fraction of a unit you get. These are called .
Moomoo Malaysia’s official rules for fractional orders:
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Minimum per purchase | USD5 (about RM21), or 0.0001 units (RSP minimum USD1) |
| When you can buy | Only while the US market is open (9:30am – 4:00pm New York time) |
| Order type | Limit or Market |
| Order duration | Day only. An order that does not fill that day expires |
| Eligible assets | Some US stocks and ETFs only. The list is under Markets → Fractional Shares |
In a real account, when the ETF is eligible for fractional trading, you can switch the order from Quantity to Amount, then type the amount in USD. If you don’t see the Amount option, make sure the US market is open and that the ETF is eligible for fractional trading.
Get to know the US order screen
This screenshot is from Paper Trade (a practice account with play money), so it only shows the Quantity field. The other fields match a real account:
- Session — choose Regular Trading Hours for fractional purchases
- Order Type — Limit or Market
- Amount — the gross amount (price × quantity). Fees are charged on top of this
- Time-in-Force — keep it on Day
Every field is explained in full in the S&P 500 tutorial.
- Session
- Gross amount, fees not included
How many VOO units do RM100, RM200 and RM300 get?
This uses a VOO price of USD710.79 and the app’s reference rate, RM1 ≈ USD0.24365 (26 Sep 2026). Prices and rates change daily, so treat this as a rough picture.
| You invest | In USD | You get roughly |
|---|---|---|
| RM100 | USD24.37 | 0.034 units |
| RM200 | USD48.73 | 0.069 units |
| RM300 | USD73.09 | 0.103 units |
| RM1,000 | USD243.65 | 0.343 units |
A fractional unit works just like a whole one. If VOO rises 10%, your 0.034 units rise 10% too. You also receive dividends in proportion to what you hold.
Part 3 — Fees on small purchases (the part people rarely work out)
US stock fees depend on the order size. The key point for small purchases: an order below 1 share (fractional) doesn’t pay a flat USD0.99 platform fee. Its platform fee is a percentage.
Orders below 1 share (fractional, including most small RSP buys): platform fee is 0.99% of the order, capped at USD0.99, with no commission. Orders of 1 share or more: USD0.99 platform fee per order (commission 0.03% is covered by the new-user 0-commission voucher). Every order also pays Malaysian stamp duty of RM1 per RM1,000 or part of it (about USD0.24).
Real example from Daus’s account: a USD25 VOO buy cost USD0.25 platform fee + USD0.24 stamp duty = USD0.49 (about 2%). Full table: Moomoo fees.
Here is the full table Daus checked under Accounts → All → Fee → My Fees and on Moomoo Malaysia’s official help pages:
| Charge | Order below 1 share (fractional) | Order of 1 share or more |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | None | 0.03% × amount (the new-user 0-commission voucher covers this) |
| Platform Fee | 0.99% × amount, capped at USD0.99 | USD0.99 per order |
| Settlement Fee | None | USD0.003 per unit, up to 1% of the amount |
| Malaysian stamp duty | RM1 for every RM1,000 or part of it, charged in USD (about USD0.24) | Same |
| SEC Fee | On sells only, very small | On sells only, very small |
There’s no SST in the US stock fee table. (Bursa stocks are different: 8% SST on fees.)
So how much do you actually lose? This uses the app’s reference rate on 6 Oct 2026, where USD1 is about RM4.11:
| Purchase (fractional) | Platform fee | Stamp duty | Total fees | Share lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RM100 (≈USD24) | ≈USD0.24 | ≈USD0.24 | ≈USD0.48 | ≈2% |
| RM200 (≈USD49) | ≈USD0.48 | ≈USD0.24 | ≈USD0.72 | ≈1.5% |
| RM300 (≈USD73) | ≈USD0.72 | ≈USD0.24 | ≈USD0.96 | ≈1.3% |
| RM1,000 (≈USD243) | USD0.99 (cap) | ≈USD0.24 | ≈USD1.23 | ≈0.5% |
An order of 1 whole share or more, any size: USD0.99 platform fee plus stamp duty and a small settlement fee. Once your 0-commission voucher ends, add 0.03% on whole-share orders.
Proof from Daus’s own account: a USD25 VOO buy through an RSP on 5 Oct 2026 cost Platform Fees USD0.25 + Stamp Duty USD0.24 = USD0.49, about 2%. You can check the real fees on any order under Accounts → History → tap the order → Details, scrolling down to Fee Details.
- Platform fee + stamp duty
So an RM100 order has to rise about 2% before you are back to your starting amount. That is not a reason to skip investing. It is a reason to buy less often but in bigger amounts, because stamp duty of about USD0.24 is charged on every order no matter how small. For example, RM300 once a month (fees ≈USD0.96) is more efficient than RM100 three times a month (≈USD1.44), even though the total invested is the same.

Moomoo has a fee calculator under Accounts → All → Fee → Calculator. Enter the ETF code, price and quantity, and it breaks down each charge on your account’s plan. How to use it is in the buy your first stock tutorial.
Part 4 — When you can buy: US market hours in Malaysian time
The US market opens 9:30am to 4:00pm New York time, Monday to Friday. In Malaysian time:
| Period | Malaysian time |
|---|---|
| Until 31 Oct 2026 (US still on daylight saving) | 9:30pm – 4:00am |
| From 2 Nov 2026 (daylight saving ends 1 Nov) | 10:30pm – 5:00am |
Three things that trip people up:
- Weekends. Friday night (Malaysian time) the market is still open, and that session ends on Saturday morning. After that Saturday night and Sunday night are closed, so you can’t buy fractional shares on those two nights. The market opens again on Monday night.
- US holidays 2026. The US market is fully closed on 26 Nov (Thanksgiving) and 25 Dec (Christmas). On 27 Nov and 24 Dec it closes early at 1:00pm New York time, which is 2:00am Malaysian time the next day.
- Status in the app. Next to the ETF name is the market status. If it says Closed, the price you see is the last closing price.
Set up an RSP. An RSP buys on schedule by itself, fractional included, so you do not need to open the app at 10pm. Just make sure you have enough cash before the RSP date.
Part 5 — Your ringgit, and the “not enough buying power” error
You do not need to convert RM to USD first, and you can’t anyway. Buy directly with your ringgit balance, and Moomoo converts it at settlement.
Under Bank Negara's FEP rules (as Moomoo applies them), ringgit can only be converted to a foreign currency after a buy order in that currency has filled. So the Exchange screen shows Exchangeable Amount 0.00 MYR even when you have ringgit. Just buy the US stock with your ringgit; Moomoo converts it at settlement. Converting USD back to MYR is allowed (Accounts → Exchange).
The full explanation with screenshots is in the RSP tutorial and FEP declaration & Exchangeable 0.00.
A Currency Exchange popup when buying: should I tap Confirm?
When you buy a US ETF with ringgit, a currency exchange popup sometimes appears before the order is sent. It’s just telling you the order will be paid with ringgit, converted to USD at settlement.
Tapping Confirm means you let Moomoo use your ringgit for that order. That’s the normal way to buy US shares from a ringgit account, so there’s nothing to worry about. The one thing to check: make sure your ringgit cash really is enough. If it isn’t, the rest of the order is covered by a margin loan. Check the Max Qty to Buy (Cash) line before you tap.
My order shows Pending or Queued over the weekend
The order hasn’t run yet, because the US market is closed from Saturday morning to Monday night Malaysian time. A whole-share order sent while the market is closed queues up and is processed when the market reopens. If you’ve changed your mind, you can Cancel it under Accounts → Orders → Open at no cost.
Fractional orders (by Amount) only go through while the market is open, and only as Day orders. So for small buys, place the order between Monday night and Friday night Malaysian time. What each order status means (Queued, Pending, Working, Filled and so on) is in the Moomoo order types tutorial.
If you see a not enough buying power error while your cash looks enough, it is usually because a Market order holds a buffer, or there is not enough left over for fees. The causes and fixes are in the buying power error section.

Deposited without the code? Here is what to do next
Plenty of people land on this page having already deposited on their own, say RM150, without the code DAUSDK37, and only then hear about the new user reward. There are two separate things here, and it helps to keep them apart:
1. Deposit size. The new-user reward starts at a RM1,000 deposit within 30 days of registering. RM150 on its own hasn’t reached that level, code or no code.
2. The DAUSDK37 code. The code can be entered at Search → “special deposit” as long as you haven’t deposited yet and are still within 30 days of registering. If you’ve already deposited without the code, or it’s past 30 days, contact Moomoo customer service and ask. There’s no guarantee, so don’t open a second account (one IC, one account). The full situations and a sample message to CS are in already have a Moomoo account.
For anyone who hasn’t deposited yet: Moomoo’s official reward follows your cumulative net deposit within 30 days of the first deposit, but the extra RM50 from code DAUSDK37 only counts if the first deposit itself is RM1,000 or more. So make the first deposit RM1,000 straight away if you want that extra. Campaign terms can change, so check in the app too.
Even if the reward is gone, that is fine. Your account still works fully, and every step on this page is the same. The reward is only a bonus. The habit you start building today matters more.

After you buy, the number in Positions is usually a little red on day one, because the fees and the spread are already counted. That’s normal. The page After your first buy, then what? explains how to read that number, when the RM25 coupon arrives after your RM200 purchase, and why US ETF dividends are cut by 30%.
Summary
- Find the ETF, check the full name
- Tap Trade, choose Regular Trading Hours
- Switch to Amount (fractional), type the amount, minimum USD5
- Buy while the US market is open: night to early morning, Monday to Friday New York time
- Remember the fee on every order (an RM100 fractional order loses about 2%). Buy less often, in bigger amounts
- Want it automatic? Set up an RSP
