“Do I have to pay anything to learn and start investing?”

Short answer: learning is free, opening an account is free, putting money in is free, and taking money out is free too. What costs money is every time you buy or sell. That cost is small if your order is big, but it becomes large in percentage terms if your order is small. This page lists everything, with real worked examples, so you know what gets deducted before you tap Buy.

Every figure below comes from the My Fees screen in the Moomoo app on Daus’s account and from Moomoo Malaysia’s official help pages, checked on 6 October 2026. Moomoo can change its fees at any time, so check again in the app before placing a big order.

What’s free

  • Opening an account and opening a CDS account for IPOs (for new users).
  • Depositing via FPX, GXBank or bank transfer.
  • Withdrawing to a Malaysian bank account in your own name.
  • Paper trading and all the data, charts and stock research tools in the app.
  • Daus’s guidance on WhatsApp. Daus doesn’t sell classes.

Bursa Malaysia stock fees

Item Rate Who takes it
Commission 0.03% of order value Moomoo (covered by the new-user 0-commission voucher for 180 days)
Platform fee RM3 per order Moomoo
Clearing fee 0.03%, maximum RM1,000 Bursa Malaysia
Stamp duty RM1 for every RM1,000 (or part of it), maximum RM1,000. REITs, and warrants (when selling only), maximum RM200 Government
Bursa ETFs Exempt from stamp duty until 31 Dec 2028 —
SST 8% on commission + platform fee + clearing fee (since 1 Oct 2025) Government

That RM3 platform fee matters most for small capital, because the amount is fixed. A RM100 order and a RM10,000 order pay the same RM3. Remember too that Bursa shares are bought in lots of 100 units, so a RM100 order only works for shares priced at RM1.00 or below (or odd lots). Lots are explained in the buy your first stock tutorial.

Worked example for Bursa stocks (with the 0-commission voucher)

Value of one order Total fees, roughly Breakdown
RM100 RM4.27 (4.3%) Platform RM3 + clearing RM0.03 + stamp duty RM1 + SST RM0.24
RM300 RM4.34 (1.4%) Platform RM3 + clearing RM0.09 + stamp duty RM1 + SST RM0.25
RM1,000 RM4.56 (0.5%) Platform RM3 + clearing RM0.30 + stamp duty RM1 + SST RM0.26

That’s for buying only. When you sell later, almost the same fees are charged again. So buying RM100 and then selling it back has already lost about 8.5% before the share price even moves. Once the 0-commission voucher ends, add another 0.03% (for example RM0.30 on a RM1,000 order) plus SST on top of it.

US stock and ETF fees

US stocks have two kinds of order as far as fees go, and the difference is big.

Item Order under 1 share (fractional) Order of 1 share or more
Commission None 0.03% (covered by the new-user 0-commission voucher)
Platform fee 0.99% of order value, maximum USD0.99 USD0.99 per order
Settlement fee None USD0.003 per share, maximum 1%
SEC fee (when selling only) None Very small, minimum USD0.01
Other fees (CAT fee, ADR fees) — Very small or rare
Malaysian stamp duty RM1 for every RM1,000 (or part of it), charged in USD Same

Stamp duty is the one people usually miss. It’s charged on every order, big or small. That RM1 is about USD0.24.

Proof from Daus’s account

This is a real RSP (auto-invest) purchase Daus made on 5 Oct 2026: USD25 of VOO, which bought 0.0352 shares. Because the order was under 1 share, the platform fee was only 0.99% (USD0.25), plus stamp duty of USD0.24. Total USD0.49, about 2% of USD25.

  1. Amount and shares
A USD25 order, which bought 0.0352 shares of VOO.
  1. Fee Details
Fee Details: USD0.25 + USD0.24.

Worked example for US stocks

The app’s reference exchange rate on 6 Oct 2026: RM1 = USD0.2434, so USD1 is about RM4.11.

Purchase Total fees, roughly Breakdown
RM100 (≈USD24), order under 1 share ≈USD0.49 (≈2%) Platform ≈USD0.25 + stamp duty ≈USD0.24
RM300 (≈USD73), order under 1 share ≈USD0.97 (≈1.3%) Platform ≈USD0.73 + stamp duty ≈USD0.24
RM1,000 (≈USD243), e.g. VOO at ≈USD710, so under 1 share ≈USD1.23 (≈0.5%) Platform USD0.99 (maximum) + stamp duty ≈USD0.24
3 shares of SPUS (≈USD184, ≈RM756), order of 1 share or more ≈USD1.24 (≈0.7%) Platform USD0.99 + stamp duty ≈USD0.24 + settlement ≈USD0.01

Just like Bursa, the fees are charged again when you sell. And small, frequent RSPs are the most expensive: a USD1 RSP pays stamp duty of about USD0.24, which is almost 25% of that purchase.

A 0-commission voucher is not 0 cost

The 180-day voucher for new users only covers commission. The platform fee, clearing fee, stamp duty and SST are still charged. So don’t believe anyone who says “trading is free on Moomoo”.

Other costs that aren’t order fees

Currency exchange. When you buy US stocks with ringgit, Moomoo converts the ringgit to USD at settlement. No separate exchange fee is listed, but the exchange rate differs slightly from the market rate. The reference rate is shown on the Exchange screen.

Margin interest at 6.8% a year. If your order is bigger than your cash, the difference is covered by a ringgit loan, and interest is calculated every day. This is the quietest cost and the most expensive one if you leave it alone. Read margin in Moomoo.

30% US dividend tax. This isn’t a Moomoo fee, but dividends from American stocks and ETFs are cut by 30% before they reach your account, because Malaysia has no tax treaty with the US.

An order bigger than your cash becomes a loan

Margin is switched on by default. If an order costs more than your cash, Moomoo covers the gap with a ringgit loan at 6.8% a year. Before you tap Buy, check Max Qty to Buy (Cash) — that is cash only. Plain Max Qty to Buy includes borrowing. How to check and switch it off: Margin in Moomoo.

How to check the fees yourself in the app

There are three places, and you should know all three.

  1. Your account’s fee schedule: Accounts → All → Fee section → My Fees. There are tabs by market (US Stocks, Malaysian Stocks and others), and the Margin Rate tab shows the interest rate.
  2. Calculator: next to My Fees there’s a Calculator. Enter a price and quantity to estimate the fees before you place an order.
  3. The real fees on one order: Accounts → History → tap the order → Details → scroll to Fee Details.
  1. My Fees · Calculator
Accounts → All → Fee: My Fees and Calculator.

Moomoo or FSMOne, which is cheaper?

A lot of people ask this, so Daus will answer honestly. The two platforms have different fee structures, so the answer depends on how you buy.

Moomoo FSMOne
US ETF, one regular order Under 1 share: 0.99% (max USD0.99). 1 share or more: USD0.99 Flat USD3.80 per order
US ETF via a monthly RSP Same as a regular order 0% processing fee for ETF RSP (subject to FSMOne’s terms)
Bursa stocks RM3 platform fee + 0.03% + Bursa fees 0.05%, minimum RM8.80

In short, for one-off US orders Moomoo is usually cheaper, because its fee follows the order value and is capped at USD0.99. For people who only want to buy US ETFs through a monthly RSP, FSMOne has a 0% processing fee offer that you should check yourself on FSMOne’s official site. Daus hasn’t checked FSMOne’s other fees (for example currency exchange), so compare the real total before you choose. Daus himself uses Moomoo.

How to reduce fees

  • Buy less often but in bigger amounts. For example, save RM300 a month and buy once, not RM100 a week.
  • Bursa ETFs have no stamp duty until 31 Dec 2028.
  • Don’t use margin by accident. Check Max Qty to Buy (Cash) before you tap Buy.
  • Don’t make your RSP too small. A USD1 RSP loses almost a quarter to stamp duty.
  • Don’t buy and sell often. Every round of buying and selling pays fees twice.
Daus’s rule: start Moomoo at RM1,000

Daus recommends opening a Moomoo account once you have RM1,000 ready for the first deposit. The new-user reward starts at RM1,000, and every order carries a fixed fee (RM3 for a Bursa trade), which eats a big share of a small balance. Technically there is no minimum deposit — this is Daus’s advice.

Not at RM1,000 yet? Don’t register yet, because the 30-day reward clock starts the day you register. Save up first in Versa Cash-i or ShopeePay Money+, and practise with Paper Trading or the simulator meanwhile. (Daus also has referral codes for Versa and Money+.)

This content is educational sharing, not financial advice. Fees and rates can change; refer to the Moomoo app and each platform’s official site.

Understand the costs now? Once your RM1,000 is ready, let's open an account.

Once you have RM1,000 ready: register through Daus's link, enter the code DAUSDK37 under "Special Deposit" BEFORE your first deposit, deposit RM1,000 within 30 days of registering, tap Claim yourself, and keep the deposit in for 60 days. About RM150 for a RM1,000 deposit, up to RM1,500 for a larger one.
