Order types and order status in Moomoo — Limit, Market, Trailing Stop, Day, GTC, Queued, Filled
What each order type in Moomoo's Order Type list means (Limit, Market, Stop Limit, Stop Market, Trailing Stop), Time-in-Force Day and GTC, US trading sessions, what order statuses like Queued, Working, Filled, Cancelled and Expired mean, what happens when you send an order while the market is closed, and the Agreement for US Fractional Shares Trading error.
When buying their first stock, a lot of people tap the Order Type field and see a long list: Limit, Market, Stop Limit, Trailing Stop… Then they panic, afraid of picking the wrong one. Others have already sent an order, but its status doesn’t change, and they don’t know whether the money has gone out or not.
The good news is, you only need to understand two order types to start. The rest can wait.
The Order Type list in the app
When you tap the Order Type field on a US stock order screen, this list appears (checked in the app on 6 Oct 2026):
- Basic Order: Limit, Market
- Conditional Orders
Basic orders (the ones beginners should use)
Limit — you set the price. The order only fills at that price or better. If the price doesn’t get there, the order waits. Under the official rules for US stocks, a Limit buy order priced more than 40% away from the market price will be rejected. This is what Daus recommends for almost every purchase, because you know exactly how much you’re paying.
Market — buy or sell at the current price, straight away. Fast, but the fill price may be slightly different from the price you see, especially for stocks that are rarely traded. A market order also makes Moomoo hold back a little extra money (a buffer), and that’s a common cause of the “not enough buying power” error even when your money looks like enough.
Conditional orders (for later)
These orders don’t go into the market straight away. They wait for the price to reach the trigger level you set, and only then are sent.
Stop Market — when the price reaches the trigger level, a Market order is sent. A common example: you hold a stock that’s now at USD20.00 and set a stop at USD18.00 so it’s sold if the price falls there.
Stop Limit — when the price reaches the trigger, a Limit order is sent at the price you set. You control the price, but under the official terms, it isn’t guaranteed to fill if the price moves fast.
Trailing Stop and Trailing Stop Limit — the trigger level moves with the price, at a fixed distance (an amount or a percentage). When the price goes up, that level follows it up. When the price falls by that distance, the order is sent. Under the official terms, a trailing stop is only for closing a position (selling shares you already hold), not for opening a new purchase.
Under Moomoo’s official terms, the system doesn’t freeze your buying power or holdings when you place a conditional order. If your money or shares aren’t enough at the time it triggers, the order can be cancelled.
Time-in-Force: how long an order lives
The Time-in-Force field decides how long an order waits if it isn’t filled.
- Day — expires by itself at the end of the trading day if it isn’t filled. Fractional orders (under 1 share) must be Day.
- GTC (Good Till Cancelled) — stays until it’s filled or you cancel it, but expires by itself after 90 calendar days.
- GTD — stays until a date you choose.
For US stocks there’s also a Session field: RTH (regular market hours only), RTH+Pre/Post-Mkt (including before the open and after the close), and an overnight session option. As a beginner, use regular market hours. Prices before the open and after the close are usually more jumpy.
US trading sessions in Malaysia time
People often ask: “why is VOO’s price already moving at 6pm, doesn’t the market open at 9:30pm?” The answer is that the US market has several sessions, not one.
| Session | Now (until end of October 2026) | From 2 November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-market (before the open) | 4:00pm – 9:30pm | 5:00pm – 10:30pm |
| Regular / RTH | 9:30pm – 4:00am | 10:30pm – 5:00am |
| Post-market (after the close) | 4:00am – 8:00am | 5:00am – 9:00am |
| Overnight (US night session) | 8:00am – 4:00pm | 9:00am – 5:00pm |
The times shift by an hour in November because the US ends daylight saving time. The pre-market, regular and post-market times above come from Moomoo MY’s official page. The overnight times are Daus’s conversion from the official US hours (8pm to 4am New York time, Sunday to Thursday), so in Malaysia they fall in the daytime, Monday to Friday.
What each session means for you:
- Regular (RTH) has the most buyers and sellers, so the gap between buy and sell prices (the spread) is smallest. Fractional orders (under 1 share) only work in this session, and must be Day orders.
- Pre-market and post-market have fewer people, so prices jump more easily and your order may not fill. That’s why the price in the app is already moving before 9:30pm.
- Overnight is only for certain stocks and ETFs (there’s a special icon on the stock’s page), Limit orders only, and no short selling.
- From Saturday morning to Monday morning (Malaysia time), all sessions are closed.
Daus’s suggestion for beginners: choose RTH and use a Limit order. A whole-share order you send outside regular hours will queue until the session you picked opens.
- Minimum USD5 per order (RSP minimum USD1).
- Only during regular US market hours, and only as a Day order. Malaysia time: until 31 Oct 2026, 9:30pm–4am; from 2 Nov 2026, 10:30pm–5am.
- Saturday night and Sunday night are closed. Friday night is open. Trading resumes Monday night.
- To sell, switch to Shares (number of units, decimals allowed). Amount works for buying only.
Order status: what it means
Check your orders at Accounts → Orders. There are two sections: Open (orders still alive) and Filled or Cancelled (the last 24 hours). For older records, use the History tab.
- Open
- Filled or Cancelled
- Status of each order
What the statuses you’ll usually see mean:
| Status | What it means in plain language | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Submitting / Queued | The order has been sent, but the market isn’t open yet, so it’s waiting in line | Wait for the session to open, or cancel if you change your mind |
| Working | The order is in the market, waiting for a matching price | Normal for Limit orders; change the price or wait |
| Partially Filled | Some shares have been bought, the rest are still waiting | Leave it, or cancel the rest |
| Filled | Done. The shares are now yours (or have been sold) | Check the price and fees in Details |
| Cancelled | Cancelled by you or the system | Send a new order if needed |
| Expired | A Day order that didn’t fill by the end of the day, or a GTC order that has reached 90 days | Send it again |
| Deactivated | Under the official terms, the order has been cancelled at the exchange but its record is still kept in Moomoo’s system | Send it again if needed |
| Failed / Rejected | Rejected, for example not enough money, no trading permission, or an incomplete agreement | Read the message under the order |
Moomoo doesn’t publish an official list of what each status means. This table comes from the statuses Daus and the audience have seen in the app (Submitting and Deactivated are from the official help pages), and the names can differ slightly by market and app version. Tap the order to see the full details.
I sent an order over the weekend and its status is waiting. What should I do?
Nothing, if you still want to buy. An order sent while the market is closed will wait for the next session. For US stocks, the market reopens on Monday night Malaysia time. If the order is Day and doesn’t fill on that trading day, it expires by itself. If you change your mind, open Accounts → Orders, tap that order, and choose Cancel.
Remember too, fractional purchases (under 1 share) can only happen during regular US market hours. One reader sent a USD25 fractional order over the weekend and saw its status waiting: an order like that can only be executed when the market opens on Monday night. If it fails or expires, send it again while the US market is open.
The “Please complete the Agreement for US Fractional Shares Trading” error
This message appears when a buy order for under 1 share fails because you haven’t agreed to the fractional trading agreement yet. Moomoo asks you to agree just once, and officially it’s referred to as an application for US fractional shares trading permission.
The fastest way Daus has seen work: go into live chat support in the app, and say you want to activate the US Fractional Shares Trading agreement. The staff will help, and you read and agree to the agreement yourself. You can also check Accounts → All → Activate Trading Permissions first. How to reach a live chat staff member is in the contact support tutorial. Once it’s done, send the order again while the US market is open.
How to cancel or change an order
Open Accounts → Orders and tap the order in the Open section. The Edit (change the price or quantity) and Cancel options are there (officially: Accounts → Orders → Edit or Cancel). An order that’s already Filled can’t be cancelled; to reverse it, you have to sell.
