📖 Or read it step by step
Opening a Moomoo account takes about 10 minutes to fill in, and 1–2 business days to get approved.
What matters here isn’t speed — it’s order. There’s one step right at the start that, if you miss it, can’t be fixed later. So read the box below before you touch anything.
If you want to qualify for the new user reward campaign, you must start registration through a referral link. If you download the app straight from the App Store and register on your own, your account won’t be linked to that campaign — and it cannot be fixed after the account is opened.
So the order matters: link first, then the app. Not the other way around.
What you need ready
Get these ready first so the process doesn’t get interrupted halfway:
- Your IC (identity card) — the original, not a copy. You’ll need to photograph the front and back.
- A phone with a working camera — for selfie verification.
- An active Malaysian phone number — to receive the SMS verification code.
- An email address you actually use — all the important notifications land there.
- Your employment details — employer name and estimated annual income. This is a regulator requirement (KYC), every licensed broker has to ask for it.
Step by step
Open the referral link — and confirm it worked
Click the referral link. It’ll open Moomoo’s campaign page in your phone’s browser.
Now do the single most important check in this entire process. Look below the campaign image. You’ll see a small line with a profile photo and text that reads:
Simple Investor DausDK | Referrer: …
If that line is there, your referral link was recorded successfully. If it’s missing, you didn’t open through the referral link — go back and click the link again before continuing.
Take two seconds to confirm this. This is the one step that can’t be fixed later.
Tap Sign up and enter your phone number
Tap the orange Sign up button at the top right of the screen.
A panel will slide up from the bottom with two options: Email and Phone. For Malaysian users, Phone is usually easier — the verification code arrives straight away by SMS.
The country code +60 is already filled in. Enter your phone number without the leading zero. For example if your number is 012-345 6789, type 123456789.
Tap Next, and you’ll get an SMS with a verification code. Enter that code.
Then set your password. Use something strong and unique — this is a financial account, not a forum login. If you have a password manager, use it.
There are Google and Facebook icons below the Next button. It’s faster, but keep in mind: you’ll need access to that account forever to log in. If you use a school or work email that might get shut down one day, skip this option.
Download the RIGHT moomoo app
Once your basic account is set up, the page will offer to let you download the app. Accept it — everything from here is much easier inside the app.
If you go to the App Store or Play Store yourself, make sure you download the right one. Search moomoo and check three things:
- App name: moomoo: Stocks & Trading
- Publisher: Moomoo Technologies Inc.
- Icon: a white cow on an orange background, with a small MY badge
There are a few financial apps with similar names floating around. The publisher name is the most important thing to check.
Log in with the account you just created — don’t tap “Sign up” again inside the app. If you register twice, you’ll end up with two accounts, and the second one won’t be linked to your referral.
Fill in your personal details — spelling must match your IC
Inside the app, you’ll start the actual account opening process. This screen will ask for:
- Full name exactly as on your IC — not a nickname, not a shortened version
- IC number
- Date of birth
- Home address
- Employment status, employer name, estimated annual income
Your name’s spelling must match your IC, letter for letter. This is the number one reason KYC gets rejected.
Examples that commonly fail:
- IC says “Mohd” but you type “Mohamad”
- IC has “bin” but you leave it out
- IC has “A/L” or “A/P” but you write “Anak Lelaki” in full
- Name has a hyphen or apostrophe that you leave out
Copy it exactly as printed on your IC, including spacing and abbreviations.
Upload your IC and do the selfie verification
The app will ask for photos of your IC (front and back), then a selfie verification — usually you’ll be asked to slowly turn your head or blink, following the on-screen instructions.
To pass on your first try:
- Take the photo in bright, even light, but avoid glare bouncing off the surface of the IC
- Place the IC on a dark, flat surface so every edge stands out clearly against the background
- Make sure all four corners of the IC are inside the frame, none cut off
- Take off glasses and any hat during the selfie
- Make sure no one else is in the frame
- Don’t use an old photo from your gallery — take a fresh one on the spot
This step has a full guide with the reason behind every rejection in the KYC tutorial.
Answer the investor profile questions — answer honestly
There are a few questions about your investing experience and risk tolerance. This isn’t a test, and there’s no “correct” answer.
The real purpose: the regulator wants to make sure brokers don’t sell high-risk products to people who aren’t ready for them. If you answer “experienced” when you’re actually a beginner, you’re only opening the door to products you don’t understand yet.
If you’re genuinely a beginner, answer as a beginner. There’s no bonus points for showing off.
Submit and wait
Double-check all your details, then submit. Your account status will change to “under review” or similar.
Usually 1–2 business days. If you submit over the weekend, count from Monday. You’ll get a notification in the app and by email once you’re approved.
Submitting repeatedly because it feels slow. This doesn’t speed anything up — it can actually push your case into a manual review queue and make it even slower. Submit once, and wait.
How to tell your account is approved
Open the Accounts tab. Once your account is active, that screen will show your total assets and a row of icons: Deposit · Exchange · IPO · RSP · All.
If those icons haven’t shown up yet, your account is still under review.
“Do I need to open a CDS account too?” — short answer: not necessarily
This question comes up alongside the registration question so often that we’ll settle it right here.
The account you just opened is already enough to buy and sell stocks — Bursa Malaysia and US. You don’t need to do anything else.
CDS is a separate account, and it’s only needed for one thing: applying for a Bursa Malaysia IPO.
CDS (Central Depository System)The official record of Bursa Malaysia share ownership, held at the exchange level.See it in the glossary → stands for Central Depository System — the official record of Malaysian share ownership at the Bursa level. When you apply for an IPO, Bursa needs a CDS account in your own name to record the units allocated to you.
| What you want to do | Need CDS? |
|---|---|
| Buy Bursa stocks already listed | No |
| Buy US stocks or ETFs | No |
| Gold, silver, RSP, Cash Plus | No |
| Apply for a Bursa Malaysia IPO | Yes |
If you’re genuinely interested in IPOs, open one early — don’t wait until there’s an IPO you actually want. IPO application windows are usually short (just a few days), while CDS approval takes a few business days. A lot of people miss out simply because they only start registering for a CDS on the day the IPO opens.
How to open one: Accounts → All → Trade → CDS Account-IPO. A lot of the fields are auto-filled from the account you already have. Full steps with screenshots are in the CDS & IPO tutorial.
After your account is approved — don’t stop here
This is the part where a lot of people get tripped up. Account approved does not mean you already qualify for the reward. There are still two steps left, and the order matters:
- Go into the app, find “Special Deposit”, and enter the promo code
- Make the minimum deposit within 30 days of registering, then keep the capital in for 60 days
Code first, then deposit. If you deposit first without entering the code, that deposit might not count toward the campaign.
And one thing we want to tell you upfront, not bury in fine print: your reward will show up in My Rewards as soon as you qualify, but to unlock it as actually yours, that deposit has to stay in for 60 days. You can withdraw your money any time — but if you pull it out before those 60 days are up, the reward doesn’t unlock.
Full steps with all the details are on the how to claim your reward page. Do it now while you still remember.
If you get stuck
“My phone number is already registered” You may have opened an account before, or started the process and never finished it. Try the forgot password option with that number. If it still doesn’t work, contact customer service inside the app — there’s a chat under Me → Support.
“My IC photo keeps getting rejected” Try a different spot with different lighting, and avoid glossy surfaces like a glass table. If your IC is worn out or the print has faded, that might be the cause — and you may need to replace your IC first.
“It’s been more than 3 days and I’m still not approved” Contact customer service through the chat inside the app. Sometimes they need extra information but the notification never reaches your phone.
“I already registered without the referral link. Can I fix it?” No. The referral link is recorded at the moment the account is opened and can’t be added afterward. If this happened to you, your account still works fully for investing — you just won’t qualify for that new user campaign.
