The most common problem with investing isn’t picking the wrong stock. It’s forgetting to do it at all.

You mean to invest every month. First month, done. Second month, you’re busy. Third month, you forget. Six months later, the account looks exactly the same.

RSP (Regular Savings Plan) solves this in the simplest way possible: it does it for you.

What RSP is

You set three things:

  1. What to buy (a specific stock or ETF)
  2. How much each time (say, RM200)
  3. When (say, the 1st of every month)

Then Moomoo carries it out on schedule, without you having to do anything.

Why this works for most people

It removes the emotional decision. When the market drops, the human instinct is to wait “until things settle” — and usually that means missing the recovery. An automatic schedule keeps buying regardless of how you feel that day.

It averages your entry price. When the price is high, your fixed amount buys fewer units. When the price is low, it buys more units. This is called dollar cost averaging. It doesn’t guarantee profit — but it removes the pressure of trying to time the “right” moment to get in.

It matches how your salary works. Most people get paid monthly. Investing monthly matches your actual cash flow.

What RSP can't do

RSP does not guarantee you’ll profit. If the asset you picked declines over the long run, buying it automatically every month just means you’re consistently buying something that’s falling. Automation solves the discipline problem — not the selection problem.

How to set up RSP in Moomoo, screen by screen

1
In the Moomoo app

Open the RSP page

Tab Accounts → the RSP icon in the shortcut row near the top. If you don’t see the icon, go to Accounts → All → Trade → RSP.

The RSP page has two tabs:

  • Overview — a list of suggestions and tools
  • My Investments — the RSP plans you already have

Near the top there’s an RSP Calculator — enter a monthly amount and a period, and it shows a projection. Useful for setting expectations before you start.

Below that are two lists: Popular (with 1-year RSP returns) and Top RSPs (with 5-year returns).

The RSP page. The Create Plan button is below.
Don't pick based on the big return numbers

The Top RSPs list shows figures like +1707% 5-year RSP return. That’s the past performance of an individual stock that happened to surge — and past performance isn’t a forecast. A stock that rose 1,700% in five years is usually very volatile, and can fall just as hard.

That list is arranged to grab attention, not to give a recommendation that fits your situation. For a long-term RSP, a broad index ETF is usually a better fit than chasing one stock’s past performance.

Tap Create Plan and fill in four fields

The Create Plan screen has just four fields:

Paying Account — which account will pay. If you have more than one, pick the right one.

Stock Symbol — the stock or ETF you want to buy repeatedly. Type its code.

Investment Amount — the amount for each purchase. Notice it says Minimum 1.00 USD — so you can start with a very small amount. Below it the app shows your Maximum Buying Pwr and Cash Buying Power.

Frequency — how often. Monthly is the most common and matches your salary cycle best.

Right at the bottom there’s an agreement checkbox, and a Buy button to activate the plan.

Four fields. Minimum 1.00 USD per purchase.

Make sure you have enough cash in your account on the execution date. If the balance isn’t enough, that purchase might get skipped — and an RSP that skips several months in a row defeats its own purpose.

Where to find RSP if the icon isn't there

The RSP icon is in the shortcut row of the Accounts tab on most accounts. If you don’t see it, the second path always works:

Accounts → All → Trade section → RSP.

The All Account Services page gathers every function in the app. RSP sits in the Trade section, next to IPO, Order History, and Dividend Reinvestment.

Check your plan in My Investments

Once a plan is active, it shows up in the My Investments tab near the top of the RSP page — next to the Overview tab.

There you can:

  • See every plan currently running
  • Pause a plan temporarily without cancelling it
  • Change the amount or frequency
  • Cancel a plan entirely

Use pause when your cash flow is tight for a month or two. It’s better than cancelling outright, since cancelling means you have to set it up from scratch again — and in practice, people who cancel rarely set it up again.

How to confirm your RSP is actually running

Open Accounts → All → Trade → Order History. Every successful RSP purchase shows up there with a blue RSP badge next to the word Buy.

The screenshot below shows an actual record: recurring RSP purchases for three different assets, the same amount each time, on a repeating date. That’s what a working RSP looks like.

Notice one more badge too: DRIP — that’s Dividend Reinvestment Plan, where dividends you receive get automatically reinvested into the same stock. It’s a separate function from RSP, and can be turned on through Accounts → All → Trade → Dividend Reinvestment.

RSP and DRIP badges — proof automatic purchases are running.

A practical date to pick

Set your RSP date a few days after your salary lands. This way the money gets invested before it has a chance to get spent on something else — and you won’t run into an insufficient balance on execution day.

How much is the right amount

The principle I hold onto: an amount you can keep up for 24 months without feeling squeezed.

RM100 a month that you sustain for two years beats RM1,000 a month that you quit after three because it’s too heavy. Consistency matters more than size, especially early on.

Start small. Raise it as your income rises.

When RSP might not be the best choice

I have to be honest — this isn’t for every situation:

If you still have high-interest debt. Credit card or personal loan debt at a high interest rate almost always costs more than average investment returns. Clear that first.

If you don’t have an emergency fund yet. Money that’s invested isn’t liquid money. If your car breaks down and you’re forced to sell your investment at the wrong time, you lock in a loss.

If you don’t yet know what you’re buying. Automation amplifies your decision — good or bad. Understand what you’re investing in first, then automate it.

Review it, don’t just forget it forever

Automatic doesn’t mean ignore it forever. Set a reminder to review it every 6 months:

  • Is that amount still a fit for your income now?
  • Is the asset you picked still a fit for your goals?
  • Is there enough cash for the next few cycles?

That’s it. Five minutes, twice a year.

Money that’s waiting to be invested

If you keep cash in your account for upcoming RSP months, that money doesn’t have to just sit idle. Check out the Cash Plus tutorial to see what options are available.
