What is Moomoo, and is it safe for Malaysians?

Before you put in any money, get to know the platform first. Who licenses Moomoo, what it can do, and what risk you're taking on.

Before we talk about which button to tap, let’s answer the question you should be asking first: I’m about to put money into this app — who actually are these people?

If you weren’t already asking that, you should be. Good instinct.

What Moomoo actually is

Moomoo is an investment platform — an app that lets you buy and sell stocks, ETFs, and a few other products straight from your phone. It acts as a broker: you tap “Buy”, and it sends the order to the real stock exchange.

In Malaysia, Moomoo is run by a local entity licensed by the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC). This part matters. It means a Malaysian authority oversees their operations, and if something goes seriously wrong, there’s somewhere you can complain.

How to check for yourself

Don’t take anyone’s word for a broker’s license — mine included. Go to the official Securities Commission Malaysia website and look up the list of licensed holders yourself. Make this a habit for any financial platform you’re about to use.

What you can actually do with Moomoo

This is what pulls so many Malaysians in — one app, a lot of things:

  • Bursa Malaysia stocks — Maybank, Tenaga, and other local companies
  • US stocks — Apple, Tesla, Nvidia, and ETFs like the S&P 500
  • Gold and silver — without needing to hold the physical metal
  • RSP (Regular Savings Plan) — auto-invest a fixed amount every month
  • Cash Plus — money sitting in your account can earn daily returns
  • Paper trading — practice with play money, zero risk

For beginners, that last one might be the most valuable. You get to learn which buttons to press without risking a single ringgit.

What the app actually looks like

If you’ve never opened Moomoo before, here’s what it looks like. These three screens are the ones you’ll use the most:

The three main screens you'll use
Watchlists — the stocks you're keeping an eye on
Markets — how the market's doing today
Accounts — your money and your stocks

It looks crowded at first glance, and that’s normal. This app serves everyone from first-timers to people trading every single day, so everything is packed onto the screen at once. As a beginner, you only need these three tabs plus the search function — the full tab-by-tab guide is here.

And before you start worrying about tapping the wrong thing: the app has a practice mode with RM1,000,000 in play money and the exact same order screen.

Paper Trade mode — RM1,000,000 in play money to practice with.

Is my money safe?

That’s the right question, and the answer has two parts people tend to mix up.

Part one: the platform. The stocks you buy are registered through a custodian system, kept separate from the broker’s own operating funds. That’s standard practice for a licensed broker — client assets don’t get mixed in with company money. For the specific protection details, read the account terms inside the app.

Part two: your investment. This is the part most people miss. A licensed broker means the platform is regulated — it does not mean your investment is guaranteed to profit. If you buy a stock and the price drops 30%, nobody’s going to reimburse you. That’s market risk, and it’s yours to carry.

A common beginner mistake

Equating “this broker is licensed” with “my money is safe.” Those are two different things. A licensed broker protects you from a dishonest broker — not from a market that falls.

Who Moomoo actually suits

Being honest, this isn’t a platform for everyone.

Good fit if you:

  • Want access to both Malaysian and US stocks in one place
  • Are comfortable figuring things out yourself and learning the app
  • Have spare money you don’t need in the near future

Maybe not a good fit if you:

  • Still carry high-interest debt (credit card, personal loan) — clear that first, investment returns rarely beat debt interest
  • Don’t have an emergency fund yet
  • Expect the platform to tell you which stock to buy — it gives you the tools, not the answers

What I don’t like

To be fair, here’s the part I find annoying:

The interface is packed. The first time you open it, there are numbers everywhere, tabs everywhere, charts everywhere. If you’ve never used a broker app before, it can feel overwhelming. That’s exactly why this website exists — so your first week isn’t spent fumbling around.

There are a lot of products. Gold, silver, options, futures. For a beginner, that can be a temptation to try something you don’t actually understand yet. My advice: stick to stocks and ETFs first, until you’re genuinely comfortable.

What’s next

Once you’re comfortable with who Moomoo is and what the risks are, the next step is opening an account. That process takes about 10 minutes to fill in, and 1–2 business days to get approved.

One important thing before you start: if you register through a referral link, you qualify for the new user reward campaign. If you register on your own without the link, that reward doesn’t apply and can’t be added later. So if you’re going to register, start from the link.

Comfortable with the platform now?

Register through Daus's link, enter the code DAUSDK37 under "Special Deposit", and deposit RM1,000 — that is RM150, and up to RM1,500 for a larger deposit.

Sign Up & Claim Your Reward

Daus is an official Marketing Representative for Moomoo Malaysia and earns a commission when you register and deposit. It costs you nothing extra.
