The first time you open Moomoo, the usual reaction is: “that’s a lot of numbers.”

That’s normal. The app is built to serve everyone from total beginners to people trading every day — so everything shows up on screen at once.

Good news: there are six tabs at the bottom of the screen, and as a beginner you really only need to properly understand three of them. This guide goes through them one by one, with real screenshots of every tab.

The numbers in the screenshots are deliberately hidden

You’ll see a row of stars (✱ ✱ ✱) where the account balance should be in some screenshots. That’s the app’s hide assets feature — tap the eye icon next to the account name to turn it on. Useful when you’re using the app in public or showing your screen to someone else.

Six tabs at the bottom of the screen

From left to right: Watchlists · Markets · Accounts · News · Discover · Search (or Me, depending on your app version).

1
First tab

Watchlists — the stocks you're keeping an eye on

This is where you save stocks you’re interested in but haven’t bought yet. Think of it like a shopping list.

Why this matters for beginners: it lets you observe before buying. Add five stocks you’re interested in, watch how the price moves for a week or two. You’ll learn a lot about how that stock behaves without risking a single cent.

What you’ll see on each row:

  • Code and name on the left (e.g. 5352 MTTSL, AVGO Broadcom)
  • A mini chart showing the day’s movement
  • The current price
  • % change in a colored box — green up, red down

At the very top is your account balance and Today’s P/L (profit and loss for the day). The eye icon next to it hides all of those numbers.

At the very bottom is an index bar — in this screenshot it shows Malaysia KLCI 1,686.74 −1.10%. That’s Bursa Malaysia’s main index, a measure of the overall local market.

How to add a stock: search for it using the search function, then tap the heart icon at the far right of the search result row.

That icon has two states, and the difference matters:

  • Filled red heart — the stock is already in your watchlist
  • Empty heart with a + mark — not added yet; tap to add

You don’t need to open the stock’s page first. Tap it directly from the search results.

Heart icon at the far right — red means already added, empty means not yet.
Watchlists tab — your watch list.
2
Second tab

Markets — what's happening in the market today

This section shows an overview of the market.

At the top are market tabs: US · MY · HK · CN · SG · ETFs · Forex · Crypto. Tap MY for Bursa Malaysia.

For each market you’ll see:

  • Major indices with the day’s chart (e.g. Dow Jones, Nasdaq, S&P 500 for US)
  • Market status — open, closed, or pre-market
  • Top gainers / losers — the stocks moving up and down the most
  • News related to that market
A common beginner mistake

Looking at the top gainers list and buying right away just because it’s shown a big rise. A stock that’s up 30% today doesn’t mean it’ll rise again tomorrow — often it’s the opposite, because people who bought early start taking profit. That list is information, not a buy recommendation.

Markets tab. Tap MY for Bursa Malaysia.

Third tab

Accounts — money, stocks, and every account function

This is the tab you’ll use the most once you actually start investing.

At the very top: your total assets and Today’s P/L. Below that, a row of five shortcut icons:

  • Deposit — put money in
  • Exchange — convert currency (e.g. MYR to USD)
  • IPO — apply for a Bursa Malaysia IPO
  • RSP — set up automatic recurring investing
  • All — open the full menu of every function

This icon row changes depending on your account and app version. If you don’t see Withdraw there, it’s under All — or in the Transfers tab.

Below that are the Assets · Orders · History · Transfers tabs, then Positions (the stocks you currently hold) and Orders (orders that are pending or already completed).

The account name at the top can be tapped to switch between accounts — for example between a Universal Account (for trading) and a CDS Account (for Bursa IPOs).

Accounts tab. Five shortcut icons below the balance.
4
Accounts → All

The All button — where every function is hiding

This is the part a lot of people never find, even though almost every important function lives here.

Tap All in the Accounts tab, and a full page opens: All Account Services, organized into groups.

Trade — IPO, Trade, Order History, CDS Account-IPO, Dividend Reinvestment, RSP, Option Exercise

Funds — Deposit, Withdraw, Exchange (currency conversion), Funds Details, Funding History, Cash Transfer

Stock — Transfer Stock In (move stocks in from another broker)

Account — Statement, Bank Account, Margin Loan Limit, Update Account Information, Activate Trading Permissions

FeeMy Fees (your full fee rate schedule) and Calculator (calculate fees before you buy)

Corporate Action — Tender Offer, Rights Issue

If you’re looking for something in the app and can’t find it, try here first before using search.

The Recommended section right at the top changes on its own based on the functions you use often. So don’t be surprised if the order is different from this screenshot — the full list below it is always the same.

5
Fourth tab

News — market news

News is organized into several tabs: Headlines · Latest · Watchlists · Earnings · Moomoo Highlights.

The most useful one for you is the Watchlists tab — it filters news to show only what’s related to stocks in your watchlist. Far more useful than reading every piece of news about the entire global market.

Don't let news drive your daily decisions

Financial news is designed to look urgent — that’s their business model. Use news to understand the companies you own, not to decide whether to buy or sell today. If a headline makes you feel like you need to act immediately, that’s usually a sign to stop and wait a day.

News tab. The Watchlists tab filters by your own stocks.
6
Fifth tab

Discover — Paper Trade, community, and other tools

This tab holds extra functions. The most valuable one for beginners is Papertrade — a practice mode with RM1,000,000 in play money and an order screen identical to the real one.

There’s also:

  • Moo Community — a user forum
  • Courses — Moomoo’s own learning material
  • Screener — filter stocks by criteria
  • Calendar — earnings and dividend dates

Besides Papertrade, there’s one more row worth noting that’s easy to miss: Wealth. That’s the doorway to funds and Cash Plus — where your idle cash can earn a return.

If you’re not ready to use real money yet, start here. Full guide in the paper trading tutorial.

7
Magnifying glass icon

Search — the doorway to every stock

The magnifying glass icon appears at the top of almost every screen. Tap it, and you can search for stocks by name or code.

The search screen also shows two useful things before you type anything:

  • MY Heat Ranking — the Malaysian stocks most people are watching today
  • Trending — headlines that are currently hot

And one more thing: this search isn’t just for stocks. Type “special deposit”, “papertrade”, or the name of any function, and it’ll take you straight to that page. It’s the fastest way to reach a function buried in the menus.

Notice the Search History in the second screenshot: the chips there mix stock codes (SLV, GLD, maybank) with function names (Special Depo…). That’s proof the search covers both.

Three other places you should know about

Me — your settings and rewards

In the latest app version, Me opens from the Discover tab (the top row). The Me page contains:

  • My Rewards — where your campaign rewards show up
  • Coupons — fee vouchers
  • Alerts — price alerts you’ve set
  • History — transaction history
  • Support — chat with customer service (full walkthrough)
  • Settings — including security settings and 2FA
The Me page — rewards, alerts, history, and support.

Funds Details — every cent in and out

Accounts → All → Funds Details. Every purchase, sale, fee, and dividend is listed one by one with dates.

This is where you go when you find yourself wondering “why isn’t my balance what I expected?” The answer is almost always here, usually in the form of a fee you forgot about.

Funds Details — a full record of every transaction.

Fee Calculator — calculate cost before you buy

Accounts → All → Fee → Calculator. Enter the stock code, price, and quantity, and it breaks down every charge.

Use this before your first purchase. It’ll change how you think about purchase size. Full breakdown with real examples in the buy your first stock tutorial.

Four things you need to understand, the rest can wait

If all of the above feels like a lot, here’s the summary. As a beginner, you only need to know:

  1. Watchlists — to observe stocks before buying
  2. Accounts — to put money in and see what you own
  3. Search — to find stocks and find functions
  4. Discover → Papertrade — to practice without risk

Options, margin, advanced screeners, and technical charts — all of that can wait until you’ve made a few real purchases and feel comfortable.
